چکیده

A continuum model of nanocrystalline copper was developed based on results from independent atomistic calculations on 11 bicrystals containing high angle grain boundaries. The relationship between grain boundary structure and its mechanical response was investigated. Based on the atomistic calculations; a constitutive law for grain boundary interfaces was implemented within a finite element calculation that consisted of a microstructure loaded in compression. The yield strength as a function of grain size was compared to experimental data and molecular dynamics results. Calculations were performed to demonstrate the relationship between intragranular plasticity and grain boundary sliding. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Calibration of nanocrystal grain boundary model based on polycrystal plasticity using molecular dynamics simulations

Decohesion parameters are computed for the tilt grain boundaries through molecular simulations and the parameters are employed in a elastoplastic deformation model of a face centered cubic (FCC) nanocrystal. The calibrated continuum grain boundary model accounts for reversible elastic and irreversible inelastic separation sliding deformations. The intragranular plasticity was modeled using a ra...

Continuum Models of Deformation Mechanisms in Nanocrystalline Metals

Nanocrystalline metals are polycrystalline metals with grain sizes in the nanometer range. They have attracted significant interest in recent years due to their unique mechanical and electrical properties. The main objective of this thesis is to develop continuum-scale descriptions of nanoscale deformation and failure mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals. The research has focused on three speci...

In situ observation of deformation processes in nanocrystalline face-centered cubic metals

The atomistic mechanisms active during plastic deformation of nanocrystalline metals are still a subject of controversy. The recently developed approach of combining automated crystal orientation mapping (ACOM) and in situ straining inside a transmission electron microscope was applied to study the deformation of nanocrystalline Pd x Au1- x thin films. This combination enables direct imaging of...

Validation of the Concurrent Atomistic-Continuum Method on Screw Dislocation/Stacking Fault Interactions

Dislocation/stacking fault interactions play an important role in the plastic deformation of metallic nanocrystals and polycrystals. These interactions have been explored in atomistic models, which are limited in scale length by high computational cost. In contrast, multiscale material modeling approaches have the potential to simulate the same systems at a fraction of the computational cost. I...

Simulation of Plastic Deformation in Glassy Polymers: Atomistic and Mesoscale Approaches

The mechanism of deformation in glasses is very different from that of crystals, even though their general behavior is very similar. In this study, we investigated the deformation of polycarbonate on the atomistic scale with molecular dynamics and on the continuum scale with a new simulation approach. The results indicated that high atomic/segmental mobility and low local density enabled the fo...
